The 1983 Daytona 500 marked the first time a driver ran a qualifying lap over 200 mph as Cale Yarborough drove his #28 Hardees Chevy Monte Carlo past the milestone. However, Yarborough crashed on his second qualifying lap and the #28 car was withdrawn. Yarborough still drove into victory lane thanks to his Pontiac Lemans backup car.
